Happy Holidays

One of the things I look forward to this time of year is seeing what the window displays will be at the major shops. Hands down, Brown Thomas always does the best, keeping them entertaining without being in-your-face commercial.

Arnotts does a good job and although they were more commercial this year, they were very festive and colourful.

Clery’s closed down this year, so their windows are empty. The other major retailers’ windows are more about selling product than putting on a show, which is a bit of a shame. When it comes to window decorations for Christmas, I think you can display products for sale and still put on an entertaining theme, it’s too bad some don’t try harder.

The Ilac shopping centre had Santa’s mountain, complete with an elf that went up and down on the pole (poor guy must be exhausted at the end of the day).

One of my team gave me a bad time for putting Happy Holidays on the gift bag I gave each team member. He claimed it was Christmas and it should say Merry Christmas (he’s not even Christian). So I snatched it back and wrote ‘& Merry Christmas’ on the tag. It may be Christmas for many, but it’s also Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Bodhi Day, Pancha Ganapati, and let’s not forget a far older winter celebration called Solstice. Throw in New Years, Hogmanay, and assorted others, and you can see that really is a multi-holiday time of year.

It’s nearly impossible to escape the commercialism that is Christmas, but whatever you believe, we can use this time to celebrate all that is good in ourselves, our family, our friends, our co-workers, and all that is good in the world. It’s a time to show those close to you how much your care and to spare a thought, a smile, and hopefully at least a token to those less fortunate.

I wish you all a Happy Holiday, whatever that means to you and hope everyone remembers that we have more in common than we have in differences and by knowing that and keeping it all the year round, we just might bring a little more peace on earth.
